The Agile Company in 2026: Why AI Agents Are Rewriting How Businesses Change

For two decades, "business agility" was mostly a management idea: smaller teams, faster sprints, quicker decisions. The tools stayed the same; only the rhythm changed. AI agents are changing the tools themselves. When a workflow is run by software that can read, decide, and act, changing the workflow stops being a six-month project and becomes a configuration change.

From pilots to production

The shift is visible in the numbers. In CrewAI's 2026 survey of 500 senior leaders at large enterprises, organizations reported that about 31% of their workflows were already automated, and every respondent said they planned to expand agent use this year. The survey was run by an agent-platform vendor, so treat it as a signal of direction rather than a census, but the direction is consistent with independent research.

McKinsey's global State of AI survey found that 88% of organizations use AI in at least one function, yet only 23% are scaling an agentic system anywhere in the enterprise. The gap between using AI and being changed by it is where the real competition is happening.

What high performers do differently

The same McKinsey research identified a small group of high performers, roughly 6% of respondents, who attribute meaningful profit to AI. They were nearly three times as likely as everyone else to have fundamentally redesigned their workflows. They did not bolt a chatbot onto an old process; they asked what the process should look like if a tireless, fast, slightly literal colleague were doing half of it.

The new risk: agent sprawl

Speed has a shadow. In OutSystems' 2026 research, 94% of organizations raised concerns about agent sprawl: dozens of agents built by different teams, each with its own access, prompts, and failure modes. Agility without governance quickly turns into a new kind of technical debt. The companies that stay fast are the ones that keep a simple registry of what each agent does, what it can touch, and who owns it.

Where to begin

Pick one workflow that touches revenue or customers, map it honestly, and ask which steps are judgment and which are routine. Give the routine to an agent, keep a person on the judgment, and measure for thirty days. Agility is not a transformation program anymore. It is a habit of rewiring one process at a time, faster than your competitors can.
